Choosing Press Release Topics
Choosing a press release topic can sometimes be a long drawn out thought process. Fortunately, the thinking part is the hardest part. You do need to think of a topic that will be of enough interest to potential readers and listeners of news and viewing of t.v. watchers for your press release to ever get considered for the next step.
This list of topics might help get your thoughts flowing:
- Something new - When you launch a new product or especially something that has evolved something existing into a better solution, you’ve got a potential winning press release topic on your hands.
- Something timely - The economy is in the pits. Practically anything that helps people get through the poor economy is newsworthy. How does your product or service relate to the economy? Upcoming event announcements are great press release topics, especially if they’re helping a non-profit cause.
- Something achieved - If you’ve won any awards lately or received some kind of company recognition, it’s worthy of a press release topic. If you were recently awarded a big client contract, the news will want to know about it also.
- Something controversial - Do you disagree with something happening in your industry? Has a celebrity or industry authority made a claim and you would like to dispute it? Going on the front lines with your opinion is a great topic for a press release and gets you in the queue as a go-to expert in your field to be called upon in the future.
- Something factual - Examples of this topic type could be your annual report posting, survey results (people and news love statistics!), research or test results, new employees added, or a new industry whitepaper you’ve just completed.
Make your own list of possible press release topics and divide them into these five categories. Or create your own and test which press releases bring the most traffic to your Web site and phone calls with offers for appearing on radio or t.v.
